Special scholarships for students with a refugee background

Supports students at risk

For many scholarships, similar requirements apply as for BAföG funding. For example, if a bachelor's degree that is recognized in Germany has already been obtained abroad, a second bachelor's degree is generally not financed. The age limits and funding amounts (currently max. 934€/month) are also generally based on the criteria for BAföG funding (for details, see the information sheet "BAföG for Refugees"). Despite this general orientation, numerous scholarship providers deviate from these criteria, so an application can be worthwhile even if you do not meet all the criteria. Please note that this overview only lists scholarships with an explicit focus on students with a refugee background. There are other scholarships (e.g. for international students) for which you may also apply and for which some of the requirements are eased or changed for refugees. You can find these in the brochure "Scholarships for International Students" at: https://www.uni-frankfurt.de/132445420.pdf. In addition, the overview does not include scholarships for doctoral students.

Detailed Information

Procedure
As a general rule, you can apply for some scholarships even if you are not yet enrolled at a university. In the case of a confirmed place at university, the scholarship will only be paid out once you can prove that you have started your studies. The application process can take up to 6 months, so it is advisable to find out about application deadlines and modalities early on. You should write your application letter independently - even if your German is not yet "perfect". Small mistakes are not a problem, but in the further application process it is important that the scholarship provider gets to know your motivations and personal values. Please also note that most of the scholarship programs for students with a refugee background are quite new and may therefore change at any time with regard to the application procedure (deadlines, documents to be submitted, etc.) and the funding conditions. The field of scholarships for students with a refugee background is overall subject to great dynamics. Therefore, this overview does not claim to be complete or up-to-date.
