La Trobe Humanitarian Scholarship

Supports students at risk

La Trobe University recognises the important contribution that people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds make to the Australian community. The La Trobe Humanitarian Scholarship (Domestic) is for face-to-face undergraduate studies, and recipients will receive an AUD $5000 annual cost-of-living bursary for the normal duration of their degree. There are two available. The La Trobe Humanitarian Scholarship (International) is for face-to-face undergraduate studies, will cover all tuition costs and include an AUD $5000 annual cost-of-living bursary for the normal duration of their degree. Admission
Recipients of the scholarship shall be selected by the University based on their: completion of the scholarship application form successfully receiving a course offer and enrolling in Semester 1 2025 as a full-time student in an undergraduate degree Recipient obligations 1.This scholarship is available for both full-time and part-time study where the part-time study is approved by La Trobe University. Please be aware that you may have visa conditions which don’t allow you to study part-time. Please refer to the Department of Home Affairs website or your visa grant notice for more information. Please also be aware there may be tax implications for scholarship recipients studying part-time. We encourage you to check whether the payments you are receiving are classified as taxable income. Please visit ATO’s Is My Scholarship Taxable? website for further information. 2.You are not able to defer an offer of a scholarship. If you decide not to enrol or discontinue your course after the scholarship is awarded, the scholarship will be withdrawn. If you intend to make changes to your study load, change your course or campus, or take a leave of absence you must first contact the Scholarships Office for advice regarding your scholarship. 3.You are required to maintain satisfactory academic progress each semester. If you do not maintain satisfactory academic progress, your scholarship may be at risk. We encourage you to access academic recovery supports if your academic progress is unsatisfactory. 4.La Trobe University will terminate your scholarship if: - you cease to meet any of the eligibility criteria or ongoing requirements, including your change of visa status - the full value of the scholarship has been paid for the maximum period allowed - you do not resume study at the conclusion of a period of leave of absence or do not meet all the University’s and Government’s administrative requirements - you are found to have committed serious academic misconduct or general misconduct. 5.It is your responsibility to contact the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Centrelink for advice regarding the taxation and social security payment implications of the scholarship. 6.You must inform the Scholarships Office immediately if your visa changes. 7.If Government policy or your residency changes, and you become eligible for Government programs that assist students with deferring fees (e.g. FEE-HELP, HECS-HELP, SA-HELP), the scholarship will no longer cover the course fee portion of your scholarship, but you may continue to receive the living allowance if you already receive it.
Qualifications
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must: Visa and eligibility requirements for La Trobe Humanitarian Scholarship (Domestic): Be residing in Australia Submit an application via VTAC Scholarships Be deemed as a person seeking asylum or a refugee holding a Resolution of Status (RoS) visa (subclass 851), Permanant Protection/Humanitarian visas 200, 201, 202, 203 and 204 Successfully receive a course offer via VTAC and enrol in Semester 1 2025 as a full-time student in an undergraduate degree* Visa and eligibility requirements for La Trobe Humanitarian Scholarship (International): Be residing in Australia Submit an application using the online application form below Be deemed as a person seeking asylum or a refugee holding one of the following: Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) (V785) Temporary Humanitarian Stay visa (Subclass 449) Temporary Humanitarian Concern visa (Subclass 786) Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV) (V790) Anyone on a bridging visa and who has applied for a Permanent Protection visa (subclass 866). Bridging Visa E (BVE) (subclass 050) Enrolled in Semester 1 2025 as a full-time student in an undergraduate degree offered by La Trobe University* * Please note students enrolled in Open Universities Australia, third-party providers and online courses are not eligible.
Procedure
Domestic students apply through VTAC Scholarships (closing Friday 11 October 2024). An online application form will be made available for International applicants on Monday 14 October 2024. Applications will close 1 December 2024 or when the successful recipients have been identified. Scholarship applications for international students will not be assessed until a course offer is confirmed.
