BAföG financial support without a German passport

The following applies specifically to refugees: You can apply for BAföG as: recognised persons entitled to asylum, recognised refugees under the Geneva Refugee Convention, beneficiaries of subsidiary protection, Holders of a residence permit pursuant to Section 24 of the Residence Act or a corresponding fictional certificate pursuant to Section 81 (5) in conjunction with (3) or (4) of the Residence Act (after applying for a residence permit pursuant to Section 24 of the Residence Act). Refugees who are only tolerated must have been lawful, permitted or tolerated in Germany for 15 months without interruption before they are entitled to BAföG. In addition, asylum seekers whose asylum procedure has not yet been completed cannot receive BAföG. For them, it has not yet been sufficiently clarified whether they can stay in Germany.

The following ways for applying and submitting declarations when applying for BAföG are possible: Applications/declarations with name, sent by post or fax , Applications/declarations submitted digitally via the online application assistant “BAföG Digital” using a user account, Applications/declarations submitted via another application portal , if in addition to the clear name in the application, the submitted form contains a repeated name at the end, as well as Applications/declarations that are sent digitally via email , to which a handwritten or electronically completed form is attached, e.g. as a PDF or JPEG, and which contains a name at the end.
