Julie Evans Refugee Scholarship
Supports students at risk
I am in a position where I am able to support some philanthropic causes and I have decided to make a donation to an area in which I have an interest. As I live in Western Sydney, I wanted to support a cause in this area and so I chose Western Sydney University. I strongly believe in the power of education to make a difference to the lives of disadvantaged people. Through my work in Social Welfare I saw the problems and difficulties experienced by people who came to Australia from disadvantaged backgrounds, especially refugees. Apart from the trauma suffered by refugees in their home country, they can be further disadvantaged in Australia through their lack of language skills, lack of resources and prejudice against them. I have chosen this course for the provision of a scholarship in the hope that it will assist to break down some of this disadvantage by helping the student to be able to concentrate on their studies through the provision of financial support during their three-year full time study. The Western Sydney University woman-centred and continuity of care course has appeal as it focusses on the needs of the woman during pregnancy and birth as well as during the early stages of their baby’s life. I trust that the scholarship will assist a student to enter the midwifery degree course and allow them to concentrate on their studies.
